The Foothills Chapter of the North Carolina Society of Surveyors is pleased to announce that John T. Furmage has been selected as the 'Foothills Chapter Surveyor of the Year" for 2000. John has been a Professional Land Surveyor for 25 years, and is the City Surveyor for the City of Hickory. He is also an instructor at Western Piedmont Community College, teaching classes in the Civil Engineering Technology Program. John is on the Education Committee for the Foothills Chapter, and is the chairman of the Government Practice Committee for the State Society.
John is an active member of the Society and participates in all Chapter meetings, and State meetings and conventions. John eagerly assists other land surveyors and is always glad to help those aspiring to become a surveyor.
He has spent a great deal of time and effort in the past two years, working hard to persuade a college or university in North Carolina to offer a Bachelor of Science degree program in Surveying. His hope is that this will soon be a reality and that the degree will be a prerequisite to becoming a Professional Land Surveyor in North Carolina. As Dean Slate, President of the North Carolina Society of Surveyors, offers, " A multitude of thanks goes to John Furmage for being tenacious and not giving up on this". The Foothills Chapter takes great pride in awarding this honor to John for all he has done and continues to do for the Chapter, the State Society, and the surveying profession.
